GB Technique: Advanced Passing the Open Guard

This week we are going to look at some more advanced strategies and techniques for passing different open guard styles.

There are many different styles of the open guard – each with its own strengths and vulnerabilities. The guard passer must understand how to deal with the guard player’s grips and hooks in order to avoid being swept and eventually pass to the side mount or the back – as we shall soon see. When it comes to passing specific styles of open guard remember: The right tool for the job.
1 – Pressure passing principle
Prof. Flavio Almeida shows a pressure strategy guard pass that protects the passer’s legs from leg entanglement styles of open guards
2 – The Leg Drag pass
Prof. Rodrigo Fajardo starts to pass open guard with a Leg Drag Guard pass but the opponent quickly moves their hips and crosses a leg over to block the initial pass.
3 – Back take from Top Single leg X Pass
Prof. Lucas Norat shows a nice technique to deal with your opponent’s hooks in Single Leg-X and get to the back.
4 – Deep Half Guard pass
Some guard players love to get underneath their opponents and undermine their base, looking for a sweep. Prof. Victor shows a solid way to pass the deep half.
