GB Learning : The Butterfly Guard Hook Sweep

This week on Gracie Barra Blog we look at one of the highest percentage techniques from the guard : the Butterfly Guard (Hook Sweep). This sweep work equally well with the gi and with some grip adjustments in no-gi as well.

It should be noted that the Butterfly Guard is a strong defense against your opponent’s leg lock attacks AND allows YOU to get into ashi garami position from the bottom as well.

Primarily it is a very powerful sweeping position with multiple different variations.

Let’s see how some 2 of Gracie Barra’s most experienced instructors Prof. Marcio Feitosa and Prof. Flavio Almeida teach how to get into, execute and adapt with this great position!

1) BJJ Butterfly Sweep # 1
4th Degree GB Black Belt Prof. Marcio Feitosa is going to show us how to get into the position when your opponent has us flattened on our back.

2) BJJ Butterfly Sweep # 2
Prof. Feitosa shows a different option when you are not able to obtain the underhook and use a 2 on 1 grip.

3) BJJ Butterfly Sweep # 3
Prof. Feitosa teaches several different grips that we can experiment with and a technique to get to the opponent’s back.

4) Advanced – Butterfly to X Guard
Prof. Flavio Almeida shares a very slick transition to X Guard when our opponent posts with foot to avoid getting swept. My favorite entry to X Guard!

5) Advanced – Butterfly to Omoplata
Prof. Flavio Almeida demonstrates how the butterfly guard is not just a sweeping position, but we can attack omoplata as well. Note the overhook grip.
