One of the keys to success in sweeping an experienced opponent is to bring them into a position in which they are not familiar and you do understand. The strange position and the combination of grips and undermining your opponent’s base will lead to 2 points for the reversal.
Let’s see how some of Gracie Barra’s instructors get into and take advantage of the bottom half guard position to sweep.
1) Lapel Half Guard Sweep
This sweep by Prof. Eduardo de Lima is a kind of hybrid between regular half guard and deep half guard. When you understand both styles of half guard, you can switch between them depending on the situation in the roll.
2)Deep Half Guard Sweep #1
Prof. Rodrigo Carvalho of Gracie Barra Vancouver shows one of the best sweeps from deep half guard position with some nice gripping details.
3) Advanced – Deep Half Guard Sweep #3
Note how Prof. Fernando Nassif from GB San Clemente enters into the deep half position from a mount escape and ends up in mount completely reversing the position.
