The Why, How, and What of Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu

Why We Do It. How We Do It. What We Do.

The way organizations communicate their ideas can make or break them. While others may have the best ideas to start with, many fall into a trap and are lost into oblivion, because of a simple mistake: failing to properly communicate.

Simon Sinek is a motivation speaker. He was able to deconstruct why great organizations are successful, and why others (despite the great ideas and products) fail, and eventually lose the chance to influence people with these ideas. Great organizations exist because they communicate effectively and efficiently.

Great organizations communicate through a simple pattern which makes sharing and relating these visions effective – from the “why,” to the “how,” to the “what.” These organizations start with the basic question: “why are we doing this as a company?”

The Gracie Barra Why:  We do this to improve the lives of people by becoming healthy. Jiu-Jitsu is for each and everyone. Regardless of social stature, gender, physical prowess etc.

Our Gracie Barra How: By putting up one Gracie Barra school in each city in every country, by being represented by competent Professors, Instructors, and investors. By making sure all of the instructors get the support they need through the ICP4 program. By making sure each student receives the best type of training in line with every Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu school, dojo and academy.

The Gracie Barra What: We offer innovative Jiu-Jitsu instruction and value added services to every student and the entire community. Gracie Barra is synonymous with great service, excellent training and instruction experience.

The good thing about Simon Sinek’s idea is that Gracie Barra has been on the right track all along through Master Carlos Gracie Jr.’s vision: “Jiu-Jitsu for everyone.” Our vision to spread Jiu-Jitsu to enhance the lives of every living person in the world completely answers “why we do” that things we DO, and why Gracie Barra exists as an organization. The powerful expression is rooted and appeals to the primal core of every human being, and this core is lodged in our emotions. The feeling when an idea runs through our veins, and living it out through our actions.

The simple statement, “Jiu-Jitsu for everyone,” answers the basic need for anyone to understand Gracie Barra and its vision. It answers why every instructor gets up in the morning, puts on a Gi and teaches students until their muscles ache. It answers why the corporate team comes up with different programs all year long.  Our motivation is rooted to inspire everyone to do their best. Our “why” is so strong that it influences our students to keep coming back to our schools because we are sharing with them a strong and powerful statement that Jiu-Jitsu changes lives. Supporting this “why” is the how of things. How we do things should reflect the basic tenets of our “why.”

If you are losing students, or need more students to sign up, you may want to revisit the “why.” How about reassessing your own “why.” Is your reason still aligned with Master Carlos’ vision to spread Jiu-Jitsu, and improve lives? Is your reason strong and powerful enough for students to share the vision with you? Are you communicating in a way to spread the vision of Jiu-Jitsu? Is it as powerful as the statement: “Jiu-Jitsu for everyone?”
