What Makes You Do BJJ?
You are special. The moment that you were born, you were already a winner. You were already someone who could take on everything in the world. The moment you decided to do BJJ, you had taken steps to becoming a better person. What makes you a good BJJ fighter is your REASON.
Reasons are strong. Reasons stem from the right amount of motivation. We all do BJJ because of different reasons! But, those reasons (no matter how superficial they may seem to be) have a deep seated reason to begin with. We just don’t see it.
In this article, let us talk about reasons.
Signing up for BJJ at your local Gracie Barra gym, you may have had a superficial motivation behind all of it. This holds true for most. But everyone has a deep reason. I will cite an example:
I enrolled in the gym because I want to stay fit.
Why?
Because I feel weak because of my weight.
Why?
Because being weak means that I may get sick.
Why is that important?
Because I want to be healthy.
Why?
Because I want to live a long and happy life.
If you notice, we all start with a superficial reason in our approach in BJJ. Some fighters just wanted to learn how to fight, but later on, they said that challenges make them better.
A fighter once told me that fighting excites him. He loves the excitement of getting on the mats. He said that he just enjoys the excitement. But as we continued with our conversation, it turned out that the reason he fights is because he likes to express himself through Jiu-Jitsu. The way that he fights is his art.
So there we have it guys! If you feel that you don’t have the right reasons to be in this sport, think again. I believe that you do. It’s just a matter of drilling down and digging deeper. We, humans, are moved by motivation. Deep, profound motivation that makes us work, strive and thrive, and live life to the fullest. What we are is motivation. Motivation make us human.
Find your core. There lies why you are doing BJJ.
