Safety: Guidelines for a Safe School

There is no guideline that when followed provides for 100% safety 100% of the time at your school. However, the following guidelines will help you to minimize the risks and maximize the likelihood that your school will be a safe environment. The ICP5 provides you with a three-step approach for safe training practices, including steps to build a culture of safety at your school. Beyond these three steps, there are 4 strategies you can implement today to get started on building this kind of culture.

An Ounce of Prevention

The old saying is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is very true when considering the training mats, but there are two basic steps you can take at your school to prevent injuries for your students and your staff.

  • Never fail to recognize the value of warm-ups and stretching.The warm-ups are opportunities to heat the body and progressively tell the muscles and ligaments that it is time to work. Warm-ups should get the whole body ready for movement, and stretching should usually be done towards the end of the warm-up, as it can greatly reduce injury and cramping.
  • Pay attention to your own health, and encourage your students to do the same.You need to model the Jiu-Jitsu way of life, demonstrating to your students what it means to live a life focused on health and fitness. Pay attention to your students and their concerns about health, always encouraging them to take their own health seriously.
