GB Technique : Submission Combinations

This week on Gracie Barra Blog we are looking at submission combination techniques and strategies.

A major part of the art of jiu-jitsu (and all combat arts in fact) is the ability to use individual attacks in combination. Just as boxers use 2, 3 and 4 punch combinations to create openings in the opponent defense and score, so jiu-jitsu guys must combine their attacks.

A good place to start developing your combinations is to look at the classic combinations that are time tested and proven to work. After, you will no doubt start to see and create your own attack combinations.

Let’s take a look at some submission combinations as demonstrated by some of the best Gracie Barra black belt instructors.

1)  Mounted Armlock

A classic submission combination from mount. Prof. Nao threatens the collar choke, forcing the opponent to expose their arm when they defend. They either will get choked or give the arm!

2) Closed Guard Choke and Armlock / Estrangulamento + Armlock

This is a great exmaple of how Prof, Jefferson attacks the choke first and then moves to the armlock when the opponent defends and exposes the arm.

3) Half Guard Kimura Bait With 3 Finishes

Pay attention to how Prof. Dave Weber draws his opponent out by offering the Kimura and then takes advantage of the opponent’s reaction to attack the legs.

4) Triangle from Back Attack / Triângulo partindo da pegada das Costas

The collar choke attack triggers the opponent to grab the leg of Prof. Rodrigo. This commits one arm inside the leg and Prof. Rodrigo uses the situation to move to a great rear triangle.
