There is a much-quoted phrase: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In terms of our schools, this can be translated to: the more we prepare for student safety, the safer our students are. This preparation begins with understanding the types of physical injuries that pose a threat to students and instructors.

Understanding the potential physical injuries that can affect your students is not only important to protecting their physical safety, but is necessary to keeping your students enthusiastic about training.

More Than Just an Injury

When a student gets injured during training or competition the risks are to more than just the physical part of the body. Sure – minor injuries such as a scratch are usually considered just that – minor and even inconsequential. But let’s take it a step further. Let’s say that a student gets a scratch on the face because a sparring partner’s nails were not well-trimmed. That scratch turns into an inflamed infection within just a couple of days, and this results in a scar. That student might be self-conscious about the scar, and he or she could also get frustrated with that sparring partner’s lack of hygiene.

Just like that minimal scratch can subtly erode away at other things, more significant injuries can negatively affect more than the physical health of the student.
