Self-Audit in BJJ

Feeling a bit under the weather when it comes to your BJJ? Having a difficult time getting out of a training rut because you feel that you are not getting any better with your BJJ? Fret not. It’s all in the head. Seriously it is.

The art if Jiu-Jitsu is an art of the mind. And the mind pretty much controls how we feel. Whenever we think that we feel down on our game, we tend to act down and feel defeated. The power of our mind is boundless. Through which thoughts become actions and translate to the physical.

Tending to our minds is like tending to a garden. Weeding out the unwanted growths will keep our heads healthy. And being able to do so, we can be sure that our journey to personal growth and welfare is going to be an enjoyable one.

So what causes us to lose belief in ourselves?

It can be things like family issues, or what people say about us. It can be a profound belief or naysay that one has about our skills as a BJJ practitioner that can let the air out of our tires. It happens. Yes. There can be people around us that may have nothing good to say about our abilities on the mat. These can also be people who think that improving our physical well-being through BJJ. These can be people who thinks that enrolling in a Jiu-Jitsu gym is a waste of time. These can be people who thinks getting choked or submitted is ridiculous.

So how do we tend to our minds about BJJ?

jiu-jitsuSelf-Audit is always the key. Self-audit is done to ensure that we keep a healthy BJJ mind. And it’s easy too!

Here is what I think I am
Is what I am thinking valid?
If not, what do I need to improve?

So let’s say, “I think I am really bad at BJJ. It’s because I keep on getting submitted by sparring partner.”

Now, validate, “Am I really that bad, or do I need more time to study his moves, and also improve on my own skills?”

Now, the improvement, “I think I can still improve. It’s a long way. After all, I am still starting out in this sport. So I just need to improve.”

This is more of a self-talk. The best athletes in the world utilize self-talk to audit their beliefs. The mind is vast and mysterious. The powers that it has, the potential of self-belief, the vastness of our abilities to become superior only if we start to believe.

BJJ is not only about the body, but also about tending the mind.
