GB Program Structure: The Bigger Picture
The ICP5 describes in detail the 7 essential components of the Gracie Barra Method. In summary, these 7 components include (beginning with the foundation):
- GB Program Structure
- GB Curriculum
- GB Class Structure
- Belt System & Attendance Cards
- GB Uniform
- Teaching and Training Practices
- Teaching Vocabulary and Commands
The Gracie Barra Program Structure is further separated into two components – the Adult Program Structure and the Kids Program Structure. These two groups of students must be addressed separately because they have separate needs. For the purpose of this discussion we will focus on the Adult Program Structure.
The Adult Program Structure
In order to develop a successful Adult Program, specific goals were defined which include defining objective criteria for separating students into class groupings based on specific training needs, creating appropriate curriculum, creating a reference for the weekly class schedules, creating a progressive ladder for students to follow in their Jiu-Jitsu journeys, strengthening your school as a business, and promoting safety.
In order to achieve these goals it was determined that a division among the adult students was needed, based upon experience and the Belt System. The Adult Program Structure is now divided into three levels:
- GB¹ The Fundamentals of the Gentle Art
- GB² Developing Your Jiu-Jitsu Game
- GB³ Achieving Black Belt Excellence
