GB Technique : Guard Passing Problems
This week on Gracie Barra Blog we are looking at some of the most common situations where jiu-jitsu students get stuck inside their opponent’s guard.
There are certain guard styles and specific situations that seem to frustrate many efforts to pass. The guard passer gets stuck, loses their balance and gets swept, fatigues and becomes vulnerable to attacks, or worst of all, get submitted.
Let’s take a look at some of these common guard passing stalemates and some passing solutions as demonstrated by some of the best Gracie Barra black belt instructors.
1)Stand Up Closed Guard Pass
This is the first major obstacle most jiu-jitsu students deal with in guard passing: How to open the legs of your opponent’s closed guard? Gracie Barra Carrollton shows us the best way to pass the closed guard.

2) Half Guard Pass Sprawling the Hips
This half guard leg triangle is super common during rolling. Prof. Marcio Feitosa shows how to pass this really frustrating situation – when your opponent has entangled your legs and has stalled out your attempts to free your leg.
3) Open Guard pass / Passagem de guarda aberta
When your opponent has great hip movement and speed, you can’t simply throw their legs aside and run around for an easy pass. That isn’t going to work! The details to notice are the attention to proper grips to control the opponent throughout the entire pass instead of tossing the legs aside.
4) Spider Guard lose the hooks / PASSAGEM DE GUARDA ARANHA EMBORCANDO O ADVERSÁRIO
In the first of 2 Spider guard passes by Prof. Carlos Liberi, Prof. Carlos demonstrates how to use your grips and distancing to eliminate your opponent’s powerful Spider guard grips.
5) Spider Guard Step Over Pass / PASSAGEM DE GUARDA ARANHA PASSANDO UMA PERNA SOBRE O ADVERSÁRIO
The important thing to understand about this pass is the management of space. Prof. Liberi steps in too close and nullifies the tension that the Spider guard player needs to control the distance.
