The GBK Program: Serving the Needs of Our Youngest Students

Specifically designed for those students who are between the ages of 3 and 15, the GBK Program adapts the GB Method to specifically fit the training needs of youth. As the ICP5 describes, many of our current instructors began studying Jiu-Jitsu during their teenage years or in their early twenties, and concurrently, many of our GB schools did not have programs which directly targeted students who were younger than these demographics.

Over the years, however, we have learned that addressing the specific learning needs of our youngest students not only helps them to succeed in their Jiu-Jitsu training, but it helps us to continue to build strong schools. A task force of experienced Black belts came together to share their knowledge and experiences teaching Jiu-Jitsu to youth. They faced this question:

How can we adapt the GB Method to the learning needs and limitations of children of different ages?

Thus evolved the GBK Program, which is in line with decades of research about how children learn. To align with the most effective learning strategies, we first divide our younger students by age, and then further by ability.
