GB Leaning: Sprawl N' Choke
A Very Useful Defense for the Double Leg Takedown
Has anybody ever tried taking you down and you are left wondering, “so what do I next?” Well I have. There are lot of variations and defensive approaches to single leg take downs. One of my favorites is to immediately pull the guard and keep him from doing anything damaging. Well, that’s about it for me. Do you know that there is a way for you to get to counter this and turn it into a submission?
Prof. Carlos Lemos Jr is a two-time World’s champion. Dubbed as “Escorrega” for being slippery in the mats.
In this video, he showcases an offensive approach after sprawling.
Step 1: Defend the double leg take down by sprawling and kicking out of the hold. Remember that one of the keys to a good sprawl is the amount of weight that you can control and put on your opponent
Step 2: Immediately, with the out arm, grip the inside of the collar on the opposite end
Step 3: Press down with your weight at the back of the opponent and grab the back collar
Step 4 – Press even further by dropping to your right and get your elbows together for a tight grip
