Professor Herman Young
4th Degree Black Belt
ICP2026, CPR, Head Instructor (Owner)
A 4th Degree Black Belt and a foundational figure in the Texas grappling community, Herman Young has been dedicated to the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 1994. He spent nearly two decades training under the legendary Carlos Machado in Dallas, receiving his Black Belt in 2012. Following this, he joined the Gracie Barra organization, continuing his evolution under the guidance of Master Carlos Gracie Jr. and Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhães.
Professor Young's technical expertise is reinforced by a distinguished career in law enforcement. As a retired police officer, he served in Gang and Narcotics units before being appointed as a Defensive Tactics Instructor for the department. This real-world experience perfectly aligns with the Gracie Barra curriculum, focusing on the practical application of Jiu-Jitsu for effective, functional self-defense.
"My goal is to share the discipline and technical precision I’ve gathered over the last 30 years. Whether you are looking for high-level competition or practical self-defense, I am here to help you navigate your own journey and ensure you reach your full potential." — Herman Young

My goal is to ensure every student feels welcome from the moment they step into our academy. I combine my lifelong BJJ foundation with the grit and technical control I developed as a high school wrestler to help our students become well-rounded athletes.
In my classes, we focus on more than just techniques; we focus on the 'Gracie Barra' spirit. Whether we are working on fundamental self-defense, coordination drills, or athletic conditioning, I love watching our students hit their goals and develop an unstoppable 'never give up' attitude. I am dedicated to being a positive role model and helping the next generation of Mansfield martial artists reach their full potential, both on and off the mats."
"I’ve spent nearly my entire life on the mats, and I know firsthand how Jiu-Jitsu builds the confidence a child needs to navigate the world. My goal is to make every student feel welcome and ensure they leave the mat stronger than when they arrived."
