In Barra da Tijuca, where Gracie Barra was founded, our global community came together to celebrate a milestone that carries deep meaning—40 years of history, growth, and shared purpose. Over four days in Rio de Janeiro, what unfolded was a powerful return to the source, an opportunity to reconnect with the roots of our organization while strengthening the bonds that continue to unite us today.

From the moment the community began to arrive, there was a feeling that this was not just another World Summit. It was a homecoming.

Students, instructors, and leaders from around the world came together in the city where Gracie Barra was born. For many, it was their first time stepping onto the same ground where the early days of our organization took shape. For others, it was a return—filled with memories, emotion, and pride. Regardless of the path that brought each person there, the connection was immediate and unmistakable.

The first day set the tone with a strong focus on leadership. Leadership Day brought together instructors and school owners to reflect on the role they play within their own communities and within the global organization. Conversations centered on growth, service, and alignment with the Gracie Barra mission and Core Values. There was a shared understanding that leadership is not only about guiding others but also about continually developing oneself to better serve students and the broader community.

The second day shifted the focus toward legacy. Legacy Day created space to explore the history behind the art we practice. Through stories, technical insights, and shared experiences, instructors offered a deeper look into their journey and their connection to the philosophy that shaped them. These moments created a bridge between past and present, allowing participants to better understand how the foundation of Gracie Barra continues to influence the way we teach and train today.

The third day brought a unique level of depth through a series of seminars dedicated to the influences that shaped Mestre Carlos Gracie Jr.’s Jiu-Jitsu and philosophy. These sessions explored the teachings of Master Carlos Gracie Sr., the technical and conceptual contributions of Helio Gracie, and the impact of Rolls Gracie on the evolution of the art. Each seminar offered insight into how these influences were absorbed, refined, and ultimately expressed through the Gracie Barra Method.

As the day unfolded, the mat became a space to recognize the journey of so many within our community. The promotions began with Mestre Carlos Gracie Jr., who was elevated to the rank of Grão-Mestre—an extraordinary moment that reflects a lifetime of dedication to Jiu-Jitsu and to the global Gracie Barra family.

To witness this recognition in the city where Gracie Barra began, surrounded by the community he has guided for 40 years, carried a profound sense of meaning. It was a moment that reflected both the weight of history and the continued evolution of our organization.

From there, the celebration continued with the promotion of new Mestres, including GB Global Board member Marcio Feitosa, honoring their leadership, commitment, and years of contribution to the art and the organization. Black belt degrees were then awarded, marking important milestones in the ongoing development of instructors who continue to serve and lead within their schools. The moment also welcomed new black belts, recognizing the discipline, perseverance, and growth required to reach this significant step in their journey.

The fourth day offered an experience that will remain with those in attendance for years to come. For the first time as Grão-Mestre, Carlos Gracie Jr. stepped onto the mat to teach.

The class itself centered on aml arm lock, a technique deeply connected to the early days of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The movement carried a story—one that traces back to the influence of his father and the formative years of the art. Training that technique in this setting brought a unique level of clarity. It highlighted how principles developed decades ago continue to remain effective, reinforcing the importance of precision, timing, and understanding over complexity.

There was a strong sense of continuity in that moment. The opportunity to learn directly from Grão-Mestre Carlos Gracie Jr., in the place where it all began, created a connection between generations of practitioners, all sharing in the same tradition.

Throughout the four days, the experience extended beyond structured sessions and time on the mats. Conversations between classes, shared meals, and moments of reflection all contributed to a deeper sense of community. The event brought together individuals from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, all connected through a common purpose and a shared set of values.

This anniversary was not only a celebration of the past, but also a recognition of the path ahead. Forty years of Gracie Barra represent a foundation built through dedication, consistency, and a commitment to something greater than individual achievement.

Being in Rio de Janeiro served as a reminder of where that journey began. It also reinforced the importance of maintaining a clear direction as the organization continues to evolve. The lessons shared, the connections strengthened, and the milestones reached during these four days will continue to influence how we move forward.

As the community returns to schools across the globe, there is a renewed sense of purpose. The responsibility to teach, to lead, and to represent Gracie Barra remains at the center of that work. Each class taught, each student supported, and each connection built contributes to the ongoing story of the organization.

Forty years in, the essence of Gracie Barra remains unchanged. The commitment to Brotherhood, Integrity, and Development continues to guide every step forward. And in Barra da Tijuca, surrounded by the people and the place where it all began, that commitment felt stronger than ever.
