Old School vs. New School

Old School vs New School.

Is there a difference?

Jiu-Jitsu has grown and become one of the most popular martial arts today. New tricks and moves such as inversions, berimbolos, rubber and worm guards have become more popular. Old school BJJ is more applicable to beginners for it is more pressure based compared to new school. An old school practitioner will look for a take down then pressure pass through guard, into a dominant position. New school is more timing, speed and surfing into a dominant position, rather than crushing.

Most new techniques being taught are not always practical in a real self-defense situation. Older BJJ techniques also focused more on striking, which is more practical and safer than attempting an inversion on the street.

Finding the style (or styles), that are best suited to yourself is all part of the wonderful journey of learning BJJ.
