Brayden Cruz
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Purple Belt
Ray Cruz
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt
Aloha! My name is Ray Cruz. I am originally from Guam and have lived in Hawaiʻi for the past 24 years. My wife is Linda Cruz, and together we have three children and one grandchild. I am a full-time teacher at Farrington High School, where I’ve dedicated my career to helping students grow both academically and personally.
I began my Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2014 at the age of 54. At the time, my son Brayden was seven years old and had already been training for three years. Watching his growth and passion for Jiu-Jitsu inspired me to step onto the mats myself. From the very first class, I knew Jiu-Jitsu would become a meaningful part of my life.
From my first month of training, I committed to practicing at least four times a week. The journey was challenging, demanding, and deeply rewarding. Along the way, I progressed through the belts and learned not only the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu, but also powerful lessons about discipline, humility, perseverance, and respect. In October of 2022, I was honored to receive my Black Belt.
I truly love training and deeply value the people I train with. Jiu-Jitsu has changed my life for the better—physically, mentally, and spiritually.
At Gracie Barra Waipahu, our academy is more than just a place to train—it is a community. We are a welcoming, family-oriented space where students of all ages and backgrounds support one another, grow together, and push each other to be better on and off the mats. Jiu-Jitsu is an incredible art, and I believe anyone can do it. The benefits go far beyond self-defense or fitness; they include confidence, resilience, discipline, and connection.
I am honored and excited to share the art—and the spirit—of Jiu-Jitsu with our Waipahu community. I look forward to meeting you, training with you, and growing together.
