Professor Alex Costa is a 5x IBJJF Masters World Champion and head instructor at Gracie Barra Newton and Gracie Barra Boston. With over 35 years of experience on the mats, Professor Alex has dedicated his life to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—not only as a competitor, but also as a coach and mentor.
He is known for blending technical excellence with a strong focus on mindset, helping students of all ages and levels reach their fullest potential both on and off the mats. In addition to training everyday practitioners, Professor Alex has coached professional athletes and top sports leaders, including NBA and NFL coaches, in the areas of performance, breath control, and mental resilience.
At Gracie Barra Newton, Professor Alex leads with passion, discipline, and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of Jiu-Jitsu. His mission is to share this art in a way that builds confidence, perseverance, and community for every student who walks through the doors.
Professor Ashley Proctor
Black Belt 2nd Degree
Professor Ashley Proctor-Costa began her martial arts journey with boxing and wrestling before discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2008. A 7-time IBJJF World Championship medalist, including two Golds in 2013 and 2017, she combines competitive success with a passion for teaching and empowering others, especially kids, in BJJ.
