Arriving at Your First Class

When you arrive for your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Gracie Barra Artarmon, you will be welcomed by the coaching team and introduced to the academy.

Many beginners feel nervous before their first class, but it quickly becomes clear that the environment is supportive and friendly. Students of all experience levels train together and help each other learn.

Our academy welcomes students from across Artarmon, Chatswood, Lane Cove, Willoughby, St Leonards and North Sydney.

The Class Warm-Up

Every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class begins with a warm-up designed to prepare your body for training.

Warm-ups usually include movements that improve:

  • Mobility

  • Coordination

  • Balance

  • Core strength

These exercises also introduce some of the basic movements used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Learning Your First Techniques

After the warm-up, the instructor will demonstrate a technique and explain it step by step.

Students then practise the movement with a training partner while the instructor provides guidance and feedback.

These techniques usually focus on fundamental positions and movements, helping beginners build a strong foundation.

Many students from nearby suburbs such as Chatswood begin their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey this way.

Partner Drills and Controlled Training

Once the technique has been explained and practised, students may perform partner drills to reinforce what they have learned.

Some classes also include light controlled training, often called “specific training,” where students practise the techniques in a safe and supervised environment.

Beginners are always guided carefully and encouraged to train at a comfortable pace.

Students from nearby areas such as Lane Cove often enjoy this interactive part of training.

A Supportive Learning Environment

One of the most important aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training is the community environment.

At Gracie Barra Artarmon, students train in a respectful and supportive atmosphere built around the values of:

  • Brotherhood

  • Integrity

  • Development

Everyone remembers their first class, and experienced students are always happy to help beginners feel comfortable.
