12 Ways Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Can Improve Your Life: 8. Problem-Solving

One of the more underrated reasons to join a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy is critical thinking and problem-solving. Although these are very important parts of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, their importance can be subtle. Problem-solving skills are built up in Jiu Jitsu through training techniques and sparring sessions. For example, when fending off a choke or escaping from being mounted by your teammate, you must properly and calmly learn to deal with and get through those tough situations. Critical thinking is taught through exercises in spatial and situational awareness. If you train at a well-rounded academy your professor should teach you the physical and nonphysical signs of a potential altercation. This is because you need to know when to use your self-defense skills to subdue an offender and when words will be able to deescalate the situation.
