3. Lyle Jackson – Black Belt

Lyle Jackson is an integral part of Gracie Barra Edmonton, bringing years of experience, dedication, and a deep passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His journey in athletics began with competitive swimming in the summer and hockey in the winter, but his path truly changed when he discovered Jiu-Jitsu.

After spending four years working on oilfield ambulances, Lyle sought a way to stay active but found traditional gym workouts uninspiring. His interest in combat sports led him to boxing and kickboxing, but it was his curiosity about Jiu-Jitsu—sparked by watching UFC—that set him on a new path. In 2013, a local newspaper article introduced him to Professor Ryan, who had recently begun teaching Jiu-Jitsu. Seeing an opportunity to train with a skilled instructor, Lyle invested his entire health spending account to get on the mats.

From day one, Jiu-Jitsu challenged him in ways he never expected. He quickly realized that even with his athletic background, the art demanded a new level of endurance and technique. But instead of being discouraged, he embraced the challenge and never looked back.

Lyle’s impact on Gracie Barra extends far beyond his own training. His leadership and willingness to step up wherever needed have made him an invaluable part of the academy. After enrolling his son in classes, he was encouraged by Professor Ryan to assist with kids’ programs—a role he took on in 2016. Since then, he has coached students of all ages, from Tiny Champs to GB1, while also contributing in various capacities, including front desk operations and academy maintenance.

He has had the privilege of witnessing Gracie Barra Edmonton’s transformation from a small gym with just three blue belts and Professor Ryan as a purple belt to the thriving academy it is today. Through it all, Lyle has remained a pillar of support and growth for the school and its students.

After briefly training closer to home, Lyle received a call from Professor Ryan inviting him to return and teach again—a testament to the value he brings to the academy. His dedication, experience, and leadership make him an irreplaceable part of Gracie Barra, and his passion for helping students succeed continues to strengthen the team. Now back where he belongs, Lyle is excited to keep inspiring and developing the next generation of Jiu-Jitsu practitioners.
