For 20 years, students have been proudly wearing the GB Uniform and representing our team worldwide. Our logo, colors and other symbols have a rich history and we’re happy to share some of it with you today. Have you have ever wondered who was behind the design, how it was developed and the philosophy it represents? Read on for the story of how the first GB Gi came to be, as told by those present that day!
In July 2003, in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Professors Marco Joca and Marcio Feitosa had spent days in front of their computer screens designing the very first kimono that would serve as a GB Team Uniform. After achieving a preliminary design they both agreed on, they decided to order a sample kimono. When the sample kimono arrived, they took it to Master Carlos in his home for review.
“I really like the kimono a lot. You both did a great job! I just think we can improve a couple of things,” Master Carlos said after examining the kimono closely and contemplating the design for a few minutes.
The two professors asked Master Carlos what he would like to change and he replied, “First, let’s change the color of our shield to red. I want red because it represents heart, blood, and love. All my students fight with heart, have the GB Jiu-Jitsu in their blood, and love our team. I also want these patches bigger. I want everyone inside a gymnasium to see and instantly recognize our uniform, and they will know that whoever is wearing the official Gracie Barra kimono is a member of the Gracie Barra family, representing our philosophy and protecting our values! One day, we will have a presence all around the globe, and when people see someone wearing a Gracie Barra uniform, they will already know exactly what that means, what it stands for, and what it belongs to! It will be an honor to wear the official Gracie Barra kimono and represent the generations of students, competitors, professors, and leaders that gave and give their best to keep our GB legacy alive!”
